Health And Safety Policy

Gardeners Osidge Health and Safety Policy

Gardeners Osidge is committed to protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. We aim to provide high quality gardening services while minimising risks arising from our work.

Policy Aims and Commitment

Our objective is to manage our work in a way that prevents injury, ill health and damage to property or the environment. Health and safety considerations are integrated into our planning, decision making and day to day gardening operations. We review this policy regularly to ensure it remains appropriate to the scale and nature of our services.

The management of Gardeners Osidge accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance and provides the resources, information, instruction and supervision necessary to maintain safe working practices.

Legal and Regulatory Compliance

Gardeners Osidge will comply with all applicable health, safety and welfare legislation relevant to gardening, landscaping and grounds maintenance activities. We will keep informed of changes to regulations and recognised industry guidance, and we will adjust our procedures where needed to maintain compliance.

Responsibilities

Management is responsible for implementing this policy, ensuring suitable risk assessments are carried out and maintained, providing training and equipment, and monitoring the effectiveness of our safety arrangements.

Employees are responsible for following safe systems of work, using equipment correctly, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and reporting hazards, accidents, near misses or unsafe conditions immediately to their supervisor.

Clients and visitors are requested to co operate with any reasonable safety instructions given by Gardeners Osidge employees while work is in progress at their premises or in shared outdoor spaces.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before undertaking gardening tasks, we assess the risks associated with the site and the planned work. This includes considering terrain, access, weather conditions, nearby buildings, traffic, power lines, planting schemes and the presence of other people or animals.

From these assessments, we establish safe methods of work for tasks such as lawn care, planting, pruning, tree work within our competence, hedge cutting, weed control, pressure washing of hard surfaces and general garden maintenance. These methods are communicated to staff and reviewed where conditions change.

Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment

Gardeners Osidge provides tools and machinery that are suitable for the work and maintained in safe working order. Equipment such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws within our scope, strimmers and powered cultivation tools is checked regularly and serviced in line with manufacturer recommendations.

Only trained and authorised employees are permitted to operate powered equipment. Guards, safety devices and emergency stop mechanisms must never be removed or bypassed. Faulty tools or machinery must be taken out of use immediately and reported to management.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where risks cannot be eliminated by other means, suitable personal protective equipment is provided and must be used. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and face protection, hearing protection, protective clothing and high visibility garments.

Employees are expected to look after their personal protective equipment, check it before use and report any damage or defects. Replacement or additional items will be provided as required.

Manual Handling and Physical Work

Gardening involves regular lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive movements. Gardeners Osidge aims to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries by planning work sensibly, using mechanical aids where practical and avoiding unnecessary manual handling.

Employees receive guidance on correct lifting techniques, posture and pacing of work. Heavy or awkward loads should be shared or broken down where possible. Staff are encouraged to report any discomfort early so that tasks or methods can be reviewed.

Chemical and Substance Safety

Where garden care products, fuels or other substances are used, they are handled and stored in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant regulations. We seek to minimise the use of hazardous products and choose safer alternatives where practicable.

Employees are trained in the safe mixing, application and disposal of any approved products used during gardening work. Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided and spillages are managed to prevent harm to people, plants and wildlife.

Site Security and Public Safety

During work on client premises and in communal outdoor areas, Gardeners Osidge takes reasonable steps to protect the public and other users of the space. This may include the use of warning signs, temporary barriers or cones, and managing vehicle movements safely.

Tools and machinery are never left running unattended. At the end of each job or workday, all equipment is secured and the work area is left in a tidy, safe condition with waste removed or stored appropriately for collection.

Environmental Considerations

We recognise the close relationship between health, safety and environmental protection in gardening. Gardeners Osidge aims to prevent pollution, reduce waste, encourage recycling of green materials and protect soil, water and local wildlife habitats while carrying out our services.

Where appropriate, we discuss environmentally responsible options with clients and plan work to limit disturbance to gardens and surrounding areas.

Training, Information and Supervision

All employees receive induction training covering our health and safety standards, emergency procedures and the correct use of tools and equipment. Additional training is provided for specialised tasks, new machinery or updated procedures.

Supervision is proportionate to the level of risk and the experience of the staff involved. Instructions and safety information are communicated clearly, and refresher training is provided when necessary.

Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting

All accidents, injuries, cases of work related ill health and near misses must be reported as soon as possible. Gardeners Osidge records these events, investigates underlying causes and takes action to prevent recurrence.

Where required, serious incidents will be reported to the relevant authorities in line with legal obligations.

Emergency Preparedness

Employees are briefed on what to do in the event of an emergency such as serious injury, fire, major spillage or sudden severe weather. First aid supplies are available and at least one person in each working team will have appropriate first aid training where practicable.

Access routes are kept clear for emergency services and employees are instructed to stop work and move to safety if conditions become hazardous.

Consultation and Policy Review

Gardeners Osidge encourages employees to contribute ideas for improving health and safety and to raise concerns without hesitation. Feedback from staff and clients is welcomed and considered as part of our continuous improvement process.

This health and safety policy is reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes in our gardening activities, equipment or relevant legislation. Updated versions will be communicated to all employees and made available to clients on request.
